Yes, "me hace falta" could be used the same way as "necesito" but, for me, it sounds less urgent, it's something you need but not right away, while "necesito" you probably need it now...
Hope this makes sense, "faltar" is one of those verbs that have no translation and are hard to explain, you have to understand the concept because the idea doesn't exist in English.
