Ayer ví una película, que no me acuerdo cual era, pero lo que me llamó la atención es que alguien dijo esto:
"When I learned I was pregnant..."
Nunca hubiera pensado que "learn" se podía usar de esta forma, como "enterarse", yo hubiera dicho "find out"
Es común? Está bien?

Donde vivo es una frase comun que se puede usar en vez de 'found out'.

To me, I think in this context, 'I learned' isn't wrong but I don't think I'd say it that way. I'd be more likely to say "I found out". If someone else said it, I wouldn't think it were strange either.

 Now that I said I would probably not use "I learned" but would say "I found out".....I turn around and use (or at least try to use) aprendió in this same context and it doesn't work at all in spanish. So maybe I WOULD say "I learned" after all.....but only in english. In spanish, I would probably use 'descubrir' instead of 'aprender'. (See Noelia? I DO listen to you.  ) Just when you think you know how you use your own language it comes back to haunt you!!!! Robie

Yes, in Spanish "to learn" can be applied only to the sense of learning a lesson. If you find out an event, then it's "enterarse" or "descubrir" either one.
