If I accidentally forget the preposition in a phrasal verb?

I had to wake up early yesterday ?

Can you understand it anyway?
I might depend on the case though, how about this one

With the help of the firemen we put out the fire.


Do they sound strange yet understandable or not understandable at all?

Lo entiendo pero me suena raro.

2. With the help of the firemen we put (out) the fire.

Sin 'out' no tiene el mismo sentido que quieras decir. Quieres poner el fuego 'dónde'? En otro lugar? Sin 'out' no quiere decir 'apagar'.
