Take a different tact.
OR
Take a different tack. It's a great site by the way. I would say that the majority of Americans say "tact" and that it has almost become a 'new' saying. What I don't know is whether people who use "Take a different tact." specifically mean "Take a different, BUT TACTFUL, approach." or whether they simply mean "Take a different approach." |

Wow I didn't even know there was a word "tack" in English nor did I know what it meant! The sentence, with the word "tact" made perfect sense to me.
Are they pronounced equally? similarly? or completely different?

No la cambiamos por interés sino por ignorancia. And maybe it's understandable because many Americans pronounce the final T in a manner so subtle that it's difficult to distinguish in fast speech.
But some of us Americans do know the correct phrase!
