Why do people call it "the John" ?
It's because the inventor of the "water closet" was a man named John Harrington. There's an urban legend that suggest that a man called Thomas Crapper invented the flushing toilet but this is not true, though he did invent many other things. His surname helped spread the urban legend.
So my friends, I have to go to the John now, see you later!

Or maybe you need to use the crapper?
The two people helped to coin two different phrases. How would you like your name to be used like this thru all eternity?
And then you have the polite people who say "restroom". I hardly every use it to rest!
