1) Bester had suggested that he take a nap
Por que no es "takes"? Hay un "should" o "could" implicito?
2) Boy, what a schmo he’d been, convincing himself he didn’t give a damn about Bester anymore.
Can't find this word in Oxford...
3) So let’s assume the witness wasn’t high on monkey grass or something, and he really saw Bester.
By the context I understand they are talking about drugs perhaps? How common is this expression?
4) Sorry – Garibaldi said – No can do.
And this is probably another way to say "I can't do it" So again how common is this way to say it? Is it expressing something? lack of education? old age?

No sé la repuesta, creo que es algo muy gramatical, pero es muy común. Me pregunto si es un ejemplo del subjuntivo en inglés.

Creo que es una palabra judía y quiere decir algo como 'idiot' o 'fool'. Es como palabras como 'schmuck' o '

Nunca he oído de 'monkey grass', pero sí, creo que quiere decir 'marihuana'.

'No can do', para mi es una frase muy informal y es bastante común

1) No sé tampoco pero tiene sentido lo que John dijo sobre subjuntivos.
2) Schmoe - estoy de acuerdo con John.
Noun 1. schmo - (Yiddish) a jerk

Yiddish - a dialect of High German including some Hebrew and other words; spoken in Europe as a vernacular by many Jews; written in the Hebrew script
dork, jerk - a dull stupid fatuous person
3) En contexto, tiene sentido que estan hablando de una droga pero tampoco escucho la frase normalmente.
4) No can do - es informal y para mi es una manera de dar infasis al hecho que no puedo hacer algo. Pero no en el sentido necesariamente que tengo las habilidades sino que es algo imposible para otras razones.
"I want you to kill him". "Sorry, No can do", he said .
(He has a gun and the key to this guy's house so it would be easy to kill him, but he's a member of the mafia and the mafia boss wants this guy alive so there's no way that he can kill him because of the problems that it will cause himself if he DOES do it)
